Week 6

Week 6

This week my class had to take their midterm exam. It consisted of multiple choice, true/false and short answer. I only conducted the test for my morning class since class started late because of a prior planned ROTC event that ran late. In my afternoon class, I gave them their exam then conducted normal class. I covered "Problem Solving" with the afternoon class. I went over how to identify a problem and how to develop a criteria that would solve it. I addressed the steps in order to complete this as well as different types of biases. Towards the end of class we performed several practical exercise which consisted of answering simple problems that people may over look.
With this problem 2 through 6 can be solved the in the same manner. Problem 7 and 8 can be solved in the same manner but can also be solved in less steps. This shows how people can become fixated and not see the whole picture.

This problem starts out with just showing the dots and asking if they can draw the line. The idea behind this is to show how attention to detail as well as thinking out side of the box is necessary.

How do you mount the candle on the wall using just these materials?

Week 5

Week 5

This week in class I covered the offense IAW ADP 3-90 and Precombat Inspections (PCI). I started the class out with a clip from the movie Blackhawk down, where they are preparing for mission but leaving a lot behind. Later on the movie they end up being it. This happened because no one checked to ensure they had the proper equipment on them. I gave the presentation on PCI's then had them conduct one. The practical exercise consisted of two exercises. One was a inspection of their uniforms the other was of what gear they would need to bring on a up coming event. After that I proceeded with the lecture on the offense.  I finished up the class with a map with a over lay(drawing on it showing movements), which we walked through together on the different offense movements.

For their leadership lab they conducted Land Navigation classes which consisted of several stations. The stations covered the basics of land nav such as map reading, compasses, pace count and terrain boards. It was conducted at the pier just north of the school.

The students are being shown how to read a terrain board.

At this station they are learning to properly use a compass.

The cadets are counting how many paces it takes them to walk 100m. This way they can count their pace and know how far they have traveled.

One my students is showing are freshman how to read a map.
